Opinion By Ted Baldwin

Brokedown Palace

     Tepid, inept, insipid crap.
A story with no conflict resolution, a lot of behind the scenes action they tell us about instead of showing us, and totally lackluster performances.
Makes me wonder if this was shot on vacation, or perhaps pieced together from boring outtakes of other films.

FIVE POSSIBLE

This is strictly for teenyboppers, wth its rosy view of the way things should be. Two teens (unbelievably played by two actresses that look 25) decide at the last second to go to Thailand instead of Hawaii without telling their parents

Inevitably, they run afoul of the local authorities in a corruption scheme that defies all logic. But no logic is needed here.

I wish I could say that I just enjoyed the scenery, or spending time with the girls, but it is not possible. Everything is plastered over with them whining about who gets the young, handsome, australian drug wholesaler, and later, about who gets the blame for their problems, and how they want their freeeeeeedom, because they are Ameeeeeeericans.

Towards the end, in a totally fathomless excursion, they break out of jail, courtesy of a wonderbra. Not only is the "escape" pointless and painful to watch, but the delivery of the bra (in a fancy gift bag no less) is accomplished by three people that are themselves teens.

Lou Diamond Phillips gives an excruciatingly bad performance as an unhelpful embassy employee who either can't be bothered or is in it up to his eyeballs. They never bother to say which it is. I like Phillips, so it must be the writing.

Like Oz, people come and go so quickly here there is no time to breathe, take stock of them, or understand how they fit into the picture. And they really don't. People are manufactured out of whole cloth - especially at the end when "The Crown" unexpectedly expedites the "bad" girl's expiation at the exhortations of the expatriate.

      It's no Midnight Express.

Amusing Sidebar of Pointless Questions

From their tagline:

What is your dream? How far would you go? Who could you trust?

  • How does a teen get a passport and travel out of the country without Dad knowing?
  • Did they not take them to the airport?
  • Were there to be no calls home?
  • Did the parents not ask where they were staying?
  • Where did Alice get marijuana in prison?
  • Why was she not busted for that?
  • What happened to the girl that was screwing them up in jail?
  • Would the wonderbra package not be inspected by greedy guards?
  • How, given the circumstances, could the three bra smugglers make it to Thailand without adult supervision?
  • Afford it? Without embassy support? Where did Darlene's Dad go?
  • What happened to all of the letters she wrote to the President?
  • Wouldn't Bill help some poor teen druggy out of the goodness of his heart?
  • What is the timeline for this "story"?
  • Who played Alice's dad?
  • Why get Yankee Hank involved again if he is not going to come through in the end?
  • Why doesn't he just bribe the damned official?
  • Why hunt for the druggie in the film if you are not going to find him?
  • Hmmmmmmm?

All in all, who cares?

The Website shows the esteem in which Fox holds this picture. A one page lame synopsis. Considering how important it is to produce websites that have impact, they really dropped the blal on this one. Amusing, isn't it?
